Ducking for apples -- change one letter and it's the story of my life.

Dorothy Parker
About This Quote

Every time I see the four letters D-I-V-O-R-C-E in my head, I think about how my life has been shaped by this one word. Even when I try to forget about the word, it's there, stuck inside my head. As a child, my father told me that if I ever got married, I'd have to change my last name. For years, I thought he was joking.

It wasn't until I discovered that no one was allowed to use his last name in our family that I finally understood what he meant. My parents had adopted me from South Korea when I was an infant. They had planned to raise me as their own child, but when they checked for adoption records, they found out that us kids didn't have surnames.

Instead of giving me a new name -- which might have hinted that I was adopted -- they decided not to tell me anything about it. Because of that decision, the only way I could be sure of who my biological parents were was if they changed their names over time. It wasn't until adulthood that I began to wonder why they'd made me adopt a new name.
